During a recent retreat in Baton Rouge, we were able to catch up with a old friend who had a near-death experience that always has stood, even in the annals of such experiences, as unique.
First off, it was very Catholic (some are more generic in their spirituality). While many such people relate reviews of their lives -- as she also did, discussing what she saw of Heaven, hell, and purgatory -- there was the added aspect of prophecy: she claims that Jesus appeared to her (radiant, but with the wounds of Crucifixion) and showed her the future of the world and specifically the U.S.
This was especially interesting to me in that the late Archbishop Philip Hannan of New Orleans had backed her -- going so far as to have his group produce a video of her.
The archbishop also once said the opening prayers for a retreat we had in which she participated. It never hurts to have the involvement of an archbishop (in this case one who, in earlier days, as an auxiliary in Washington, D.C., was called upon to give the homily for President John F. Kennedy's funeral Mass!).
But basically what intrigued me, in seeing her last month, was what I hadn't known about her, and what even those of you who may have read about her don't know either. For beyond a near-death experiencer (as scientists term such folks), I have come to learn, she is a lifelong mystic.
I'd like to take a closer look at her experiences -- as well as a bit more on her prophecies -- in this new "special report."
