From the Dallas News:
What is the best-known American artwork of the 20th century?
Judging from the replications found on museum-shop umbrellas, you might think it’s Hopper’s Nighthawks, a Warhol silkscreen or one of Pollock’s drip paintings.
But in terms of widespread diffusion, none of those works has reached the audience of Head of Christ (1940), the American Protestant icon presenting a relatable Jesus with a kindly affect. With at least a half-billion reproductions in circulation, there are more versions of this image than there are people in the United States.
