Cardinal Burke Re-Appointed

VATICAN CITY — One of Pope Francis’ leading conservative critics, American Cardinal Raymond Burke, is getting a second life at the Vatican high court he headed until Francis removed him in 2014.

Francis appointed Burke as a member of the Apostolic Signatura on Saturday. Members serve as advisers to the court, which currently is headed by a longtime Vatican diplomat, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti.

Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke among the judging members of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. This is significant, considering the role that Cardinal Burke took during the public debate of the last two years around the Synods on the family and the Apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia. Burke is one of the four Cardinals who signed the “dubia”, and is also the only member of the College of Cardinals who has repeatedly spoken in public about a “formal correction” to the Pope.

The bulletin of the Holy See Press Office announced the appointment of five new members of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest Vatican tribunal, which judges in the Pope’s name. The current Prefect of the Signatura is Cardinal Dominique Mamberti. In November 2014, he took Burke’s place, who was transferred to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Burke had been Prefect of the Signatura since 2008. The appointment of the American Cardinal testifies the Pope’s esteem of his canonical competence, already demonstrated by giving him the uneasy job of collecting the depositions on the complex issue of the accusations of paedophilia towards the Archbishop of Guam Anthony Sabran Apuron.
