The inattention is understandable: unless one had precise directions to this place, one would have no way of even knowing there's a bog behind the palms, palmettos, oaks, and brush, let alone that in the bog have been found skeletal "mummies" that shocked the archaeological world some years back because, when radiocarbon dating was complete, it indicated human remains that are between six and nine thousand years old. In other words, the bodies in this bog, which had been wrapped in bark, sunk, and preserved by ideal conditions, were people who lived in what is now the United States at least 4,000 -- and perhaps as long ago as 7,000 -- years before Jesus.

When half the swamp was drained (the other half remains untouched, which is why it remains discrete), 168 prehistoric bodies -- more than half in startlingly good shape -- were exhumed, a bunch with some brain tissue intact.

This was a tribe -- still unidentified -- that existed thousands of years before even Noah. DNA analyzed from them showed a genetic marker also found in Europe and the Middle East -- Israel -- as well as Asia and Native Americans.

The bodies were not of typical ancestors ("paleo-indians").

Nor are others.

As I came to learn, mysterious remains have been found in many parts of the U.S., indicating that human origins are far more complex than scientists have led themselves and us to believe. Also, more bizarre.

In the case of Windover, the mummies (which, curiously enough, had red hair) were about the size of modern humans.

But other prehistoric remains found across America, especially the Midwest and Southwest, assert something very different: The existence of beings in the long-gone past who were much taller, in many cases perhaps impossibly tall, seeming to confirm -- if we can believe the reports -- something the Old Testament says repeatedly: that in the past was a race or races of human giants.

Really? Isn't this all just "Jack-and-the-beanstalk" stuff?

Put it this way: there is surprising evidence of men whose incredible prehistoric remains reportedly have been unearthed in hundreds of spots in the Americas and whose presence, according to Christian tradition, had a mystical component, leading, in the case of Noah, in the Middle East, to massive chastisement.

The Flood. Giants.

Nephilim.
