DID THE C.I.A. UNLEASH A DEMON?

Years ago — many years ago, in 1976 — I appeared on a major New York City talk show hosted by a fellow named “Long John” Nebel and his wife, Candy Jones. I was just twenty-four, and I believe it was my first radio appearance, certainly my first significant one — a bit daunting, in that Nebel had the highest-rated show in New York (and also daunting because it was all night and I had to do the show for five hours).
John and Candy were famous for being tough interviewers, and they were very antagonistic to the topic of my book, so it was a pitched battle. A couple hours into the show, Nebel, who was suffering from terminal cancer, slouched in his wheelchair and dozed as Candy, his regular co-host, handled the show along with a friend of hers from the New York Symphony. Though hardened skeptics of the supernatural, the Nebels did shows on strange topics, and I was there to discuss scientific research into parapsychology (which I now call the “occult” and don’t go near).
I’m not here to talk of the radio show (which despite everything, went very well).
What I am here to speak about is Candy Jones.
A few years after doing her show, I happened into a corner store where, in the paperback rack, I spotted a book called The C.I.A. Control of Candy Jones by Don McBain. I bought it and was shocked at the contents. Talk about “high strangeness”!
Once one of America’s leading models (in 1943, in just one month, her face graced the covers of eleven national magazines, and during World War Two her pin-ups were on the walls of countless U.S. military), Jones had been the star of a USO tour in the South Pacific. The high-ranking military contacts she made during those tours ended up leading to her “brainwashing” and creation in her of a second personality. This “personality” would be used in overseas missions.
Far-fetched? The program, now well-known, was called MK-ULTRA and is no rumor. It was even the subject of Congressional hearings in the 1970s. Hundreds of Americans were used as guinea pigs or operatives in MK-ULTRA — many of them military types and most used unwittingly on secret missions the government didn’t want them to recall. That was enough of a twist — two personalities in one body.
But it may have gone well beyond that. I just reread the book and was surprised again — this time by the spiritual implications. Government hypnotists, it turns out, may have been tapping not so much into an alternate “personality” as a spirit. Candy, who often lapsed into a totally different person, actually may have been possessed? Ironic this is: a woman so skeptical of the supernatural that neither she nor her C.I.A. handlers had any idea what was happening to her!
That’s the subject of this “special report”: how the government, meddling unethically with hypnosis, drugs, electroshock, and mind control, seems to have opened a spiritual door no one, least of all her husband John, was quite prepared for.
